Autumn squirrels - photography workshop
Photography Workshop / Red Squirrels in Autumn Colors
Winter is getting closer and the squirrels are running around all day long trying to find and hide food for the upcoming cold months. Because of that, autumn is the best time of the year to photograph squirrels. Before winter the forest will turn into beautiful yellow and orange colors, giving the photos an amazing colorful and moody touch.
Our main target are red squirrels, but we will also see lot of different birds and we also have a great chance of spotting mice, voles or bigger mammals if we’re lucky. The squirrels are pretty friendly and if we quietly wait they may come very close to us and we may even take super personal close-up shots with wide-angle lenses.
Finding squirrels in Finland is not that difficult. But getting a good photo of these quick fellas is more challenging. In this workshop I will show and teach you all my best tricks and tips that I’ve learned during the years. Great squirrel photo has a good light, interesting back- and foreground, shows the squirrel in an interesting way and also tells some kind of story.
To make the experience as good as possible, there’s only five (5) spots available for this workshop. With less people we can get closer to the animals without scaring them way. Workshop will be organized if at least 2 people are joining.
Time: October 12th, 2019 (Saturday) 8am - 12pm (noon)
Location: Helsinki (exact meeting location will be confirmed later)
Price: 200€ (incl. 24% VAT)
Spots left: 0/5 - All spots are reserved at the moment! You may still sign up in case someone cancels.
When it comes to wildlife, it’s never 100% sure that we can find them. That’s why I offer a squirrel-guarantee for this workshop. If we don’t see any squirrels, you’ll get your money back. However, if we didn’t see any, I’d be very surprised.
What you need:
Any kind of camera works! Even with a phone camera you may be able to get some decent shots.
This is up to you what kind of photos you want to take! You can use longer lens (for example 70-200mm or 100-400mm) to take photos from distance. With a long lens it may be easier to detach the animal from the background with a nice bokeh. To get more personal and unique squirrel shots, I recommend a wide-angle lens (anything between 10mm-50mm). If possible, bring several different lenses as we can never know how the squirrels will behave that day. My own “to-go” lenses for squirrels are 35mm & 70-200mm.
Autumn in Finland can be very unpredictable. Wear warm clothes enough so you don’t get cold when staying still and waiting for the animals. Take clothes that can get wet/dirty. To get the best possible photos, we may have to lay on the ground which can be wet/dirty. Prefer natural colors to fit in to the forest. In case it’s going to rain, please wear waterproof clothes, bring an umbrella or at least something to cover your camera gear (a big plastic bag works well). Extra pair of dry socks has never been a bad idea either ;)
